Brazil Travel Guide

Brazil is a country located in South America. It is the largest country in South America and the fifth-largest country in the world by area and population.

Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a unique cultural experience, Brazil has something to offer everyone. With its rich mix of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and modern amenities, it's no wonder Brazil is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Brazil's major cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have well-established public transportation systems, including buses and metro systems. They are relatively cheap, convenient, and run frequently.

We discovered that taxis are widely available in most cities and are a good option for shorter trips. They're often metered, but it's best to negotiate a fare with the driver beforehand if you need clarification.

Brazil is a vast country with many green spaces and parks, so renting a bicycle can be a great way to explore the natural surroundings and exercise. Some cities even have bike-sharing programs for tourists.

Are you looking for the top things to do in Brazil? Brazil is home to a vibrant culture and stunning natural beauty. With so many things to do, finding the best things takes time and effort. Our list of the top things to do in Brazil will ensure you never have a dull moment. So why wait?

Important Things To Know

Currency

The local currency in Brazil is the Brazilian Real (BRL).

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Brazil, especially in tourist areas and big cities. However, having some cash on hand for smaller transactions is always a good idea, as not all places accept card payments.

National Languages

Brazil's official language is Portuguese, which is widely spoken throughout the country. However, many regional dialects and indigenous languages are also spoken in Brazil, particularly in rural areas.

Despite this linguistic diversity, English is widely spoken in tourist areas and by service industry professionals, making it relatively easy for English-speaking tourists to get by in Brazil.

Time Zones

Brazil is a large country that spans four time zones.

The official time zone is UTC-3 where 90% of the population lives and includes popular cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília.

The additional time zones include:

  • The UTC-2 time zone is used in Fernando de Noronha, a remote archipelago located off the coast of Brazil.
  • The UTC-4 time zone is used in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas
  • The UTC-5 time zone covers the states of Amapa and Western Pará.

Climate And Weather

Brazil has a diverse range of climates due to its large size. Still, it can generally be divided into two main climatic zones: the tropical zone in the north and the subtropical zone in the south.

In the tropical zone, temperatures are consistently hot, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 80-90°F (27-32°C). The rainy season in this region typically lasts from December to May, with high humidity and frequent downpours.

In the subtropical zone, temperatures are milder, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 60-75°F (16-24°C). The rainy season in this region is shorter, typically lasting from December to February, and is characterized by brief, less intense showers.

Regardless of the region, the sun can be intense in Brazil, so it's essential to wear appropriate clothing and sun protection.

  • Rio de Janeiro is one of Brazil's most iconic cities, and one of our favorite spots to experience Brazil’s stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and world-famous Carnival celebration. From the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue to the famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Rio offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors.
  • For history lovers, we recommend visiting Salvador. It’s a city steeped in history, with a rich Afro-Brazilian culture and colonial architecture that is truly unique. We love the historic Pelourinho neighborhood, where exploring colonial-era churches and mansions and sampling delicious Bahian cuisine is a must. Don’t forget to experience the lively rhythms of samba, capoeira, and other traditional music and dance styles that Salvador has to offer.
  • If you’re looking for a relaxed getaway, then Florianópolis is the perfect city for you. It’s an island city off the coast of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. We’ve enjoyed its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and charming historic center. Florianópolis is a popular destination for both Brazilian and international tourists and a highly recommended city on our list.
