The U.S. State Department has elevated its travel advisory for Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.In an update issued Wednesday, the department advised Americans to not travel to Gaza due to terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflict. Officials also encouraged U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to Israel and the West Bank due to terrorism and civil unrest. The updated travel advisory comes just days after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing hundreds of people and prompting the country to declare war against the militant group.Officials point out that "U.S. government employees are currently restricted from personal travel other than mission-critical travel" to Israel. "The Embassy can impose even greater travel restrictions on its personnel, with little to no notice due to increased security issues or threats."Earlier this week, the Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) said it was "deeply saddened by the events that took place at our southern border with Gaza on Saturday, October 7.""As a result of the events, the government has declared a state of emergency," officials added. "The safety and security of our visitors is our top priority, and we are working to ensure their well-being in every way possible," IMOT added. "IMOT, in collaboration with relevant authorities, is working to assist those who wish to depart from Israel."More than two dozen U.S. citizens have been killed in the attacks and more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for, according to American officials.
