Universal Studios Japan teamed up with Nintendo to unveil the
first look at Super Nintendo World’s upcoming Donkey Kong expansion.
Set to open in Spring 2024, the Donkey Kong Country area of
the theme park will increase the size of the property by 1.7 times, according
to Universal Japan officials.
Just like Super
Nintendo World, the Donkey Kong-themed world will utilize wearable ‘Power
Up Bands’ that work with an app to immerse guests in the experience.
“I am very happy to be able to make the world of Donkey Kong
a reality following the world of Mario,” Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto
said. Miyamoto will also be an advisor during the construction of the new
Donkey Kong land.
As for Donkey Kong World’s main attraction, Universal Japan
revealed that it will be an elevated roller coaster based on the franchise’s
mine cart rides that make passengers feel like they are jumping gaps in the
track.
“I am looking forward to creating a thrilling Donkey Kong
experience with the amazing team at Universal,” Miyamoto continued. “It will
take some time until it is completed, but it will be a unique area for not only
people who are familiar with Donkey Kong games, but for all guests.”
To celebrate the announcements, Nintendo and Universal
Studios released a teaser video that features a new store themed on Funky Kong,
a bongos mini-game, interactive elements and themed merchandise and food.
