Talk about being in the right place at the right time.
An off-duty pilot who was vacationing with his family had to
step in for the captain of his flight when the original pilot became incapacitated
by an uncontrollable nosebleed, according to People.com.
The incident happened on November 22 on an Air Transat
Flight from Toronto to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
"As one of our other captains was on board with his
family heading out on vacation, he was fit and able to take over the duties of
the incapacitated captain for the remainder of the flight," an Air Transat
spokesperson said.
"It is worth noting that our pilots are expertly
trained to deal with situations such as this one and can manage flying our
aircraft unassisted," the statement continued. "As such, there was
absolutely no risk for anyone on this flight and the situation would have been
the same had the backup pilot not been on board."
The off-duty captain took over about three hours into the
journey and completed the flight.
The plane and its temporary pilot were able to land with no
problem, and no injuries were reported among the nearly 300 people on board the
flight.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada determined it was
a Class 5 occurrence, which means it was not subject to further investigation.
